Fishing Reports...

Big Bear Lake fishing report September 19, 2011:

BIG BEAR LAKE: The trout bite has remained very good with a lot of limits for anglers trolling or fishing bait in the west end of the lake from the west ramp to the dam and into Papoose Bay. As the dog days of summer come to Big Bear Lake, things are not what they should be.  The trout are acting like it is spring or fall not summer!  With surface water temperatures at 68 degrees in the western end of the lake and oxygen levels good down to 26 feet at the dam, 16 feet at Papoose Bay and 20 feet at the west ramp the trout have set up summer camp there. Anglers trolling leadcore at 2 to 4 colors are not only finding limits of trout early and late, but inexplicably the fish are biting in the middle of the day.  This type of bite is very unusual in the summer time when the sun is hot and high.  Drift fishing with PowerBait in the same area has also got the trout on the chew.   Slip bobbers are a good idea, but not essential, as long as you count and measure the line as your bait sinks down to the levels noted. Most trollers are using Thomas Buoyants, Needlefish, or Dick Nite spoons fished behind just two to four colors of lead core. Bait anglers are using a slip bobber in 15 to 20 feet of water and floating dough baits. The trout are pan-sized to 3-8 pounds with an occasional bigger fish, and there were DFG trout plants last week and three weeks ago. The bass action is fair to good, especially around the observatory and north shore toward Grout Bay. Jigs and plastics are best in eight to 20 feet, but there has been some topwater around the weed beds early and late, with both smallmouth to two pounds and largemouth to three pounds in the action. The crappie action is fair to good around sheltered docks and rocky structure, with small, sparkle jigs the best bet. Most are eight to 10 inches long. Catfish has started to pick up this week. more fishing news... The lake is warming a bit and starting to layer (stratify) so oxygen is still high enough for the fish to breathe after a quick jog around your boat but temps are driving them westerly fast. We still have good temps to Windy Point west but I think they have turned the corner of Gilner Point and running west for deeper, cooler water. If you don't know how to slip bob you may want to learn now because for still fisherman that is a great way to catch summer trout in Big Bear. I still say troll with something deep and still fish with gooey stuff that gets under your finger nails for a stringer of trout, but soon we will need to go summer style and slip bob and troll with heavy crap to get down to where that party is.
Crappie, on the other hand, grab a light rod with light line and a light colored mini jig (WHITE) and put your offering near a dock or rock and slam a couple nice slabs. Crappie is great eating and fun to catch for the kids and adults alike. Please take what you want to eat and leave the rest for another day. It is wide open right NOW for crappie fishing.
The bass fishing is now again the best kept secret here in Big Bear Lake. We have had some great spring bass fishing and I am not worried about letting the secret out because no one reads this so it is still a secret. Big Mike caught a five pound plus smallmouth last week (which would have been a Lake record but he didn't want to kill it) fishing docks. He wouldn't tell me what he was using but I did see a spinner bait hanging off his rod. Lots!!! of nice largemouth being caught on jigs and plastics all over in the Lake in the shallows and cover.

Please do us all a favor, or someone you like a favor, and let our smaller bass live and put them back and catch them again another day when they are even bigger
.

Big Bear Lake is open for fishing 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Lake is regularly stocked with Rainbow Trout, with a limit of 5 per day. Other species in the Lake include large mouth bass, small mouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, sunfish, carp, channel catfish and pumpkinseed.

Big Bear Lake is a good producer of wild brown trout. Running clear and cool below Big Bear Dam, Bear Creek also supports a good population of rainbows and, some say, a few salmon. While I've never seen a salmon caught out of the stream, I know they exist in Big Bear Lake. So it is possible. Two trailheads east of Snow Valley Ski Resort provide good access to the stream below. While the fishing is good in the upper reaches of the stream, the further down you go the better it gets and the greater the ratio of browns to rainbows. This year, even before the runoff was complete, I met an angler down near the confluence with the Santa Ana that had caught and released a 19" brown along with a couple of nice 'bows. In the last few years with the improved water situations and nicer weather it could be even better in the years to come.

The crappie fishing has been epic this season which means next year we will see some slab daddies showing up. The mini jigs and worms seem to make it happen all summer long.

Catfish fishing has been completely off the charts all summer long. I have been wrong before but there may be some time left to throw some cut mackerel or a perfectly good hot dog out there to see what happens!

A wonderful old time fisherman told me recently that the fishing is the best it has ever been in his time fishing in Big Bear.

I took that as a complement and it made me feel real good about our Lake. The same day an hour later I got a nasty-gram that said that fishing has never been worse and I should learn how to do my job. So what I learned is that we should all be flexible in our approach to catching fish and what worked yesterday may not work today. So go deeper, get shallower, change baits, and find the magic for that day and you will put up better numbers consistently.

Catfish are screaming out of the water at the east end of the Lake. I stopped at the marsh the other night late to see what all the fisher people were doing up late at night.

CATCHING beautiful catfish, that is what they were doing. Go east and throw out that stinky-whatever and get in on the catfish frenzy. Nice large channel cats and numerous bullheads are being caught in the warmer shallows.

Big Bear Lake is for catching trout and this year has been a great one and keeps on going strong.(read the fish report above)

Big Bear Lake Fishing Report from the Big Bear Lake Marketing Association:

2011, Big Bear Lake Marketing Association news release:
Big trout are being reeled in on Big Bear Lake. Come up to fish.
as the 2011 fishing season gets even better...

Shore anglers along the North Shore from the dam to Juniper Pt. are doing well fishing off the bottom with a sliding egg sinker, short leader (12-18 inches) and PowerBait and/or nightcrawler pitched 10 to 20 feet from the shore. Those trolling on the surface or with leadcore form 1.5 to 2.5 colors are seeing action with the trout.

Located in the heart of the San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Lake offers some of the best early- and late-season trout fishing in Southern California. Summer still produces some fast and furious trout fishing but also throws three- to five-pound bass into the mix. Big Bear Lake also has numerous areas distinguished for their grassy shorelines, lily pads, submerged logs, and other fish-attracting structures favored by the lake's bass population. The walking or wading angler can easily access these spots, and a well-presented leech pattern or surface popper will often result in a jolting strike. Types of Fish: Trout, bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill in this huge 3000 acre lake.
