Roads OPEN to all mountain travelers... 6+ inches of fresh snow coming this weekend

Long range forecast / discussion...March 16 to 31-- It looks like the Pacific stays busy through mid March, with fairly frequent low pressure systems moving in, with another storm possible around  the 16th. The snow storm on the 16th would possibly be more of a "cut-off" type system. By the 16th/ 17th, we see low pressure moving in off the Pacific for a chance of snow (the following Tuesday), with more snow storms possibly moving in that week. The rest of March, and April should be a good spring period for snow as the pattern remains unsettled most of the time, broken up by relatively short periods of high pressure. Now is looking like THE time to hit the slopes in SoCal ski resorts. Winter snow is far from over.   We believe much more Spring snow coming to Big Bear in March and April.


 

 


--WINTER OUTLOOK; For the the SoCal mountain resort areas, we expect heavier than average snowfall. Temperatures are expected to be near average, and combined with greater than average available moisture with incoming storms, this should be enough to generate above average snowfall. We also expect some wide variations in temperatures, and extreme cold spells continuing through March and even April. We will be adding more detail to this as we go along.CM

 

LATEST El Nino UPDATE: March 5, 2010...The National Weather Service and NOAA are predicting the moderate El Nino weather event extending at least through Spring 2010. El Niño is expected to exert a significant influence on the global weather and climate in the coming  three months. El Niño impacts are expected to last into Southern California until spring. Expected impacts during March-April 2010:  include above-average precipitation for the southern tier of the country, that means lots of snow for Big Bear. Make your cabin rental reservations for late winter and spring snow today!
 

 


Please drive with care and always carry chains during Winter months.


DRIVING DIRECTIONS:


1) Hwy SR18 from the San Bernardino area. Begin at the Waterman exit from the 210 freeway. Go north towards Lake Arrowhead, then continue on by following the signs to Big Bear Lake. When you get to the Dam, turn right for 2 1/2 miles to Golden Bear Cottages. The office is on the right. NOTE: this road is considered too narrow and curvy for some inexperienced mountain drivers and for passengers prone to motion sickness. We might suggest it as a last choice.

 

2) Hwy SR38 from the Redlands area. Begin at the Hwy 38 exit from the 10 freeway in Redlands. Go north on Orange Street about 1/2 mile to Lugonia. Turn right on Lugonia (which is SR38) and follow it through Mentone and up the mountain towards Big Bear. When you get to Big Bear, take a left on the main road and follow it along the lake. After about 10 miles you will see the Preforming Arts/Civic Center, our office is just 1/2 mile past it on the left. NOTE: this road is a bit longer, but except for about 7 miles, it is far less curvy. A favorite of many drivers because it is a beautiful senic drive.


3) Hwy SR18 from the High Desert. Beginning at Lucerne Valley, take Hwy 18 towards Big Bear. When you get to the top of the mountain, go right along the Lake towards Big Bear. When you get to Stanfield Cut-off, go over Big Bear Lake and turn right (West) towards the Dam. We are about 6 miles just past the Preforming Arts/Civic Center. The office is on the left side of the road. NOTE: This is the best road for guests traveling from Las Vegas (less than 3 hours for the total drive). This road only has about 6 miles of curvy road. The rest is an easy drive.

 

4) Hwy SR330 from the San Bernardino area. Go north on the 330 from the 210 Freeway for 15.7 miles to Running Springs. When you get to Running Springs, continue straight towards Big Bear Lake (the road name changes to the SR18, but it is the same road). Follow SR18 for about 12 miles towards Big Bear Lake until you get to the Dam. When you get to the Dam, turn right for 2.3 miles to Golden Bear Cottages. The office is on the right. NOTE: This is the most direct route from the Inland Empire, Orange Co., LA and San Diego. It is a very good road, but a bit curvy for some passengers prone to motion sickness.
